Electric Kiln Vent Systems - Information
Back to Electronic Kiln Vent Systems Forward to pricing

The equipment needs to be ducted to atmosphere. The kiln vent is designed for use with standard non corrosive PVC storm water pipe as ducting plus associated fittings all readily available from your local hardware or plumbing store.

Cowl or louvre would be supplied with equipment as specified with order. Ducting from your local supplier or installer i.e. Plumber

Electrical installation by electrician i.e. to be direct wired to kiln. In the case of a new kiln and kiln vent electrical hook-up would be done by B. & L. Tetlow staff during manufacture.

The number 1 and 2 kiln vent models create a slight down draft in the kiln.

Air is drawn through the venturi tube thus creating a slight vacuum at the floor vent. Thus drawing all by-products from kiln. By products are diluted with cool air then vented to atmosphere.

It would be envisaged that the Kiln vent 3 would be suitable for all existing front loading kilns or where it would be impractical to install the kiln vent 1 or 2.

We would recommend the kiln vent 1 in most situations as it creates a slight down draft situation in kiln thus helping balance of rising heat effect.

We would also recommend the Kiln-vent 1 be fitted to all medium and large kilns during manufacture to keep site installation, cost etc to a minimum.

Part of the efficient operation is based on the expansion of by-products in kiln environment, approximately 1600-1, this expansion creates pressure in the kiln. The expanded by-product is then drawn away, diluted then expelled to atmosphere. Only a minimal amount of air is actually drawn into the kiln for this reason. Kiln firing cycles are only extended marginally. Kiln operating costs are therefore much the same.

Expansion is based on 1 litre of water becoming 1673 litres of steam at atmospheric pressure

Venting Kiln
In cases where a Tetlow kiln vent system is fitted to kiln.

Model (1 & 2)
Underneath system all bungs should remain in their respective positions for the duration of firing.

Model (3)
Overhead system all roof bungs should be removed and door bungs should remain in door for duration of firing.
Vent system will automatically function when power to kiln is switched on, and will continue to operate until power is switched off. This should not be done until the kiln has cooled to a reasonable level.
Care should be taken not to place ware over exhaust hole in floor of kiln. This would make vent system inoperative.
Alternatively a shelf could be set on 25mm props thus giving approximately 12mm clearance to exhaust tube.
